Marina Bay Sands Photography: A Magical Sunset Moment

RICKY GUI . 3.5 TO 4.5 MINUTES READING TIME

On this particular day, after hours of back end work, I stepped outside for a short break. The skies were crystal blue all afternoon—I guess an almost an 80% chance of a cloud-free sunset.

I thought about heading straight home to finish one more urgent task before I call it a day. After it was done, I grabbed my camera and went out again. My objective was set-up in mind: to photograph Marina Bay Sands during golden hour. In all my years wandering or exploring this district, I had only witnessed that golden glow on the façade once or twice. But as always, the universe had other plans—and something even more magical unfolded.

Finding the perfect vantage point

I arrived at the nearest train station and went directly to an elevated spot I often scout for my Singapore private photo tours. It’s a perspective not many visitors notice, and one I hadn’t yet tried at this particular time of day.

That’s the beauty of photography in Singapore: even at the same location, different timings create different stories. Each moment is unplanned, unique, and worth chasing. From above the street and crowd, the surrounding was calmer, giving me the peace of mind to fully enjoy the experience.

For this session, I carried only my Canon 70–200mm lens. It’s my favorite piece of glass and one I always recommend to guests if they have it—perfect for isolating subjects, compressing scenes, and capturing stunning details around Marina Bay.

Marina Bay Sands and crow

Marina Bay Sands, one of the most iconic building in the world.

A magical twist: Crows and sunburst light

Just as I set up, a crow swooped unexpectedly into my frame—adding life to an otherwise architectural composition. Moments later, the sun broke through and lit up the edges of Marina Bay Sands in a way I had never seen before. Certain parts of the façade reflected the strong sunlight, creating layers of glow across the structure.

I quickly adjusted my settings to f/16, producing a crisp sunburst effect as the light hit the building. Then, almost as if the moment was scripted, another crow appeared. Coincidence—or perfect timing? These are the surprises that keep me coming back with my camera.

The façade of Marina Bay Sands glows in a brilliant sunburst, just as a crow speeds past my frame—an unplanned moment that turned the scene into something extraordinary.

The lesson: Learning to see, not just shoot

This evening reminded me why I love to guide travelers on one-on-one photography tours in Singapore. It’s not about rushing from one attraction to the next, but about slowing down and truly learning to see.

Photography is as much about presence as it is about technique. That day, Marina Bay Sands gave me both—a technical exercise in light chasing and an emotional reminder of why I enjoy shooting and I want to help more people see a scene more in-depth.
