Industrial Photography Case Studies

Sanofi

Location: Tuas, Singapore
Industry: Pharmaceutical Manufacturing
Service: Industrial, Architectural & Interior Photography

Project Overview

This case study showcases an industrial photography assignment for an overseas pharmaceutical client with operations based in Singapore’s Tuas industrial sector. The objective was to produce a carefully curated set of high-quality images within a live pharmaceutical manufacturing environment, intended for submission to international design and industry awards.

The project required a photographer with prior experience in regulated, high-security facilities, strong awareness of safety protocols, and the ability to work independently under strict operational constraints.

Client Challenge

The project was initiated on relatively short notice after being delayed for almost a year. The client needed to mobilise quickly while maintaining full compliance with internal safety, security, and cleanliness standards.

Key challenges included:

  • Working inside a clean room pharmaceutical environment requiring full clean suit attire

  • Operating within a high-security facility, with staff accompaniment at all times

  • Photographing low-light industrial and architectural spaces without disrupting operations

  • Executing a pre-planned shot list developed jointly by the client and photographer

  • Ensuring all images met the visual and technical standards required for award submissions

This was a niche assignment where technical competence, situational awareness, and experience within pharmaceutical facilities were critical.

Approach & Planning

A critical constraint for this assignment was a fixed 8-hour shooting window within the operational pharmaceutical facility. With no option for overtime or re-entry, all planning, coordination, and execution had to be precise and efficient. There was no margin for trial-and-error, making preparation essential.
A site recce was conducted within the same week as the shoot to maximise efficiency. During the recce, I focused on:

  • Identifying optimal camera positions and angles for architectural and interior compositions

  • Assessing available and ambient lighting conditions

  • Confirming movement flow and access restrictions within the facility

  • Finalising the quotation and aligning on administrative requirements, including payment setup

The shoot itself was carried out solo, with strong on-ground support from the client’s staff, who assisted in access coordination and ensured safety compliance throughout the process. Time was factored in for clean suit preparation, though movement within the facility was fortunately not overly restrictive.

My shooting approach combined industrial photography precision with architectural and interior sensibilities, balancing technical accuracy with clean, structured visuals. Clear communication with ground staff was essential to align operational realities with visual objectives.

Execution

  • Full compliance with clean room protocols and safety procedures

  • Tripod-based shooting to maintain image quality in low-light environments

  • Continuous coordination with facility staff during image setup

  • Focus on clarity, spatial structure, and design intent within industrial spaces

Outcome & Usage

A total of 18 horizontal images were produced and curated in a 3×6 presentation layout, with the opening image serving as the visual hero. The client initially selected a defined number of images for post-production, followed by additional image selections after reviewing the first delivery.

The final photographs were used for:

  • Submission to industry and architectural awards

  • Corporate visual assets showcasing facility standards and design

The extended image selection reflected the client’s confidence in the overall quality and consistency of the work.

Why This Matters for Pharmaceutical Clients in Tuas

Photographing pharmaceutical facilities requires more than technical camera skills. It demands an understanding of regulated environments, respect for safety protocols, and the ability to collaborate seamlessly with operational teams.

This project highlights my experience working within Singapore’s pharmaceutical and industrial sector, particularly in Tuas, delivering professional-grade imagery that meets both compliance and branding requirements.

Ricky was hired for his first-ever logistics photography project in Singapore, despite having no prior experience in this specific niche. The client recognized his extensive expertise in industrial photography, built over more than a decade. His impressive portfolio includes documenting construction sites, capturing vessels for annual reports, and photographing various industrial projects across Singapore. Not only that, the client requires architecture picture of the warehouse and building which he is truly an expert at.

Operating as a solo photographer, Ricky offers a cost-effective alternative to larger creative agencies. His affordable commercial photography services make him a preferred choice for businesses in Singapore seeking high-quality visuals on a budget.

This case study highlights Ricky's ability to adapt and leverage his extensive industrial and architecture experience to deliver exceptional results in logistics photography.
